The Edmonds School District Board of Directors will meet June 9 to tackle a packed agenda featuring construction agreements for major projects including the new Salish Middle School and College Place upgrade projects. The board will also review budgets, revisit high school social studies and health curriculum, and consider plans to refund $47 million of the District’s 2015 and 2016 bonds.

Celebrations

The meeting will open with several recognitions and celebrations. The first will highlight six district elementary schools – Lynndale, Meadowdale, Mountlake Terrace, Sherwood, Terrace Park and Westgate –   for Washington State Board of Education recognition related to their work in closing opportunity gaps and supporting academic growth.

The board will then formally celebrate and thank its 2025-2026 student advisors: Ismail Elbibary, Tatiana Lindberg, Scarlett Luo, Sam Mabeza and Bitanya Tesfaye. The celebrations will end with recognition for outstanding spring athletes in the District and for the Lynnwood High School FIRST robotics team, which recently attended the national championship.

Reports

Under reports, the Board will review the business and finance report for April 2026, followed by a presentation outlining the District’s upcoming bond sale. Plans for the sale include issuing the $200 million installment of the $594 million bond authorization approved by voters in February 2024. Staff will also detail strategy to refund $47.75 million of the district’s 2015 and 2016 bonds, which is projected to generate $1.78 million in taxpayer savings, according to meeting documents.

New business

Following the bond reports, the Board will consider a resolution authorizing the District to enter a contract to collect up to $200 million from the 2024 voter-approved bonds and up to $50 million in refunding bonds, refinancing older debt at lower interest rates. No action is scheduled for Tuesday’s meeting and the bond sale is anticipated for mid-August.

The Board will also take action to approve a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) contract for the new Salish Middle School, which the District is constructing at the old Alderwood Middle School site in Lynnwood. The proposed contract with Spee West Construction is $102,477,252, and would establish a total budget authorization of $170 million for unexpected costs.

Additionally, the Board will vote on a GMA contract for the College Place Elementary and Middle School replacement projects with Cornerstone Construction for $139,046,441. The proposed contract authorizes a total project cost of $214 million, with estimated completion for the new buildings in July 2028 and demolition of the old middle school in early 2029.

The Board is also set to vote on a $5.3 million construction and architecture contract with Mithun for the Westgate Elementary replacement project.

Unfinished business

Second readings and final action on three high school curriculum adoptions are scheduled for Tuesday’s meeting. All three follow a review and pilot process spanning September 2025 to May 2026 to bring District classrooms into alignment with state requirements.

If approved, the board will replace health curriculum in place since 1999, social studies material from 2007 and science curriculum last updated in 2004 and 2006. The new curriculum updates educational materials to include modern findings and education standards and include the usage of new workbooks and other materials.
