Five Mountlake Terrace High School students have qualified for and will attend the National Technology Student Association (TSA) Conference this summer near Dallas, Texas.
To raise funds for the trip, the five students will offer a STEM Saturday for 4th-6th graders interested in participating in activities and contests based on science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The national TSA conference is expected to draw approximately 5,000 attendees from across the country.
Heading to Dallas for the conference June 27-July 2 will be Kathleen Cram, Connor Ebright, Haeley Johnston, Jonathan Thiem and Liam Madson; all participated in regional and state TSA competitions this school year and earned a spot at the national conference where they will take part in events such as leadership training, career preparation, debating technological issues, essays on technology, problem solving, structural engineering and a Knowledge Bowl.
On Saturday, May 23, the five students will lead two sessions of activities at Mountlake Terrace High School for 4-6th graders. The sessions will include a problem-solving contest, chemistry experiments such as changing a copper penny into brass and crushing a can with air, and designing a picture frame then producing it with a laser cutter. A morning session will run from 9 a.m. to noon; an afternoon session will be offered from 1 to 4 p.m. Cost is $50 which includes all necessary supplies and snacks.
