Mark, an MLTnews reader, sent us this memory of growing up in Mountlake Terrace:

I remember playing in the woods where the city hall is located back to 236th and into the canyon where I-5 is now. We used to catch crawdads in Johnny’s creek between Lake Ballinger and the elementary school.

When they built the city hall, they also had an ampitheater behind where the new police station is located (I guess everything is new – I moved away in 1971), and we saw plays and they projected movies on an outdoor screen. I remember several city parties where they closed the entire parking lot at DD Meats and the pharmacy had music. And the pirates coming to the Seafair parade held down 56th – great memories.

  1. I did a Google search for Jonny’s creek in Mountlake Terrace, and this is the only article I got.
I used to crawl through drainpipes from the canyon overpass to where Evergreen elementary school used to be and catch frogs. My brother showed me how to catch crawdads using a nail with bacon on it and a string. I remember every event you mentioned. I played in that ampitheater all my childhood days as I lived off 232nd street.
When they showed movies my mom would bring a large blanket for us all to sit on we’d eat stuff like a real picnic. D&D meats is actually still there. Remember Summers plaza and Wilners too. there was also a laundramat and everybodys favorite candy store CAINES. Your post is now 14 years old so I’m probably talking to myself here.
Terrace has changed so much, the whole town seemed to just be a small patch of stores around Foodland and Ben Franklins at the crossroads of 232nd and 56th. My mother still lives in the house I grew up in, she’s 93 this year and is now the last surviving grownup from my childhood. I can’t believe there is someone out there who remembers the Canyon and Johnny’s creek. Never forget it! (candy cane park and Donald duck park as well) It certainly was a great life back then. We will never see the likes of it again I am afraid, o well, Se La Vie.
