My Neighborhood News joins Gigafact to test facts, provide sources, level up community conversations

Yes, I want to support My MLTnews!

My Neighborhood News Group has joined a network of nonpartisan newsrooms nationwide to rebuild trust with local readers through an organization called Gigafact.

Gigafact’s approach is simple: identify real claims circulating in a community, identify facts that can be answered with a yes/no response, then use high-quality news sources (not influencers or social media) to check the claim. These Fact Briefs are easy to read and all sources are linked.

My Neighborhood News Group (MNNG) is the first news organization in the Pacific Northwest to join this group of more than 20 newsrooms across the country.

“At a time when misinformation and disinformation is rampant and it is becoming increasingly difficult to tell fact from fiction, we believe this is the right time for this type of journalism,” said MNNG President and CEO Teresa Wippel.

Here’s where you come in. If you see a claim you want fact-checked, let us know. There are requirements. It must be a single fact that can be answered with a yes or no response. This is different from a story that provides context and more detail, and that takes more than two paragraphs.

“We will continue to do those more detailed stories. But they are not Fact Brief,” Wippel said.

“Thank you for your support as we work to provide fact-based community news for South Snohomish County,” she added.
