“Social Justice Sundays Sign-waving” in May

For most of us in the United States, we believe violent political disagreement is wrong, but that the right to disagree and protest is “unalienable” – preserved in our founding documents. Every Sunday in May there will be an opportunity to stand up and let your voice be heard on a topic important to you at one of five “Social Justice Sundays” sign-wavings, 1-2 p.m., at the Shoreline-Edmonds line (intersection of Aurora Avenue North and N. 205th St.).

Come one Sunday or all five – go with a theme or choose your own (bring a sign or there will be some available to borrow):

* May 3/Workers – coming just after International Workers Day and a diffuse “general strike” on the Friday before – demonstrate workers are as important as billionares with outsized, unelected influence. Tax, finance and business laws affect ALL of us and together we can make a difference.

* May 10/Moms – on Mother’s Day celebrate moms of all kinds (birth, step, two moms, immigrant moms detained with their kids …) and so many related issues (childcare, maternal health/racially disparate outcomes, reproductive rights and more).

* May 17/U.S. Armed Forces – celebrating those who serve, demanding their risk be for good cause (and ensuring they are getting quality food and their mail!) on the Sunday following Armed Forces Day.

* May 24/U.S. military members who died while serving – honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice on Memorial Day.

* Kickoff to summer/May 31 – so many inter-connected environmental, economic, health, and social justice issues.

Organizer Everyday Activists reiterates participants should be committed to peaceful protest. Non-perishable food and toiletry items will be accepted for donation to a local organization assisting those in need.
