The Rotary Club of Edmonds gathered recently to celebrate Ryan Henry’s receipt of the Second Chance Scholarship, a life-changing award created by Edmonds City Councilmember and Rotary member Will Chen.
For Chen, establishing this scholarship was deeply personal. Growing up during the Cultural Revolution in mainland China, he experienced homelessness between ages 8 and 10. He later came to the U.S. alone, working long hours and multiple jobs to build a new life.
That journey shaped his belief in hard work, opportunity and the power of a true second chance.
“I wanted to pass that opportunity forward,” Chen said. “When I brought this scholarship idea to Rotary, members immediately stepped up to help make it real.”
At a recent meeting, Edmonds College representative Ciela Valle-Olguin thanked the Rotarians who contributed. Ryan will speak at an upcoming Rotary of Edmonds meeting to share his story and gratitude.
