What do burpees, barbells, rowing machines and environmental stewardship have in common?

Lynnwood-based Experience Momentum made the connection between the health of our bodies and the health of our planet during last month’s annual Sweat for the Environment fitness competition and community fundraiser. Held April 18, the event raised $14,600 for environmental nonprofits and brought together athletes, community members, local partners and nonprofit organizations for a day of movement, connection and purpose, the company said in a news release..

First launched in 2019, Sweat for the Environment has grown into an annual tradition that blends fitness, friendly competition, environmental awareness and community impact.

This year, 20 teams competed across three divisions: men’s pairs, women’s pairs and mixed pairs. Teams participated in a series of workouts designed to test endurance, strength and all-around fitness. Events included endurance-based challenges, strength-focused workouts and a combination event that pushed teams to work together through both physical and mental fatigue.

But Sweat for the Environment is about more than competition.

“The inspiration behind this event came from wanting to connect the dots between personal health and planetary health,” said Shanon Tysland, founder and CEO of Experience Momentum. “We believe that when people move their bodies, connect with others, and support causes bigger than themselves, something powerful happens. It reminds us that our own well-being is tied to the well-being of the communities and natural spaces around us.”

Participants learned more about environmental nonprofits during the event.

The $14,600 was distributed among eight environmental and community-focused organizations:

  • EarthCorps: $1,050
  • The Service Board: $1,000
  • Washington’s National Park Fund: $1,050
  • Puget Soundkeeper: $2,450
  • Glacier Peak Institute: $2,050
  • North Cascades Institute: $1,600
  • Viva Farms: $3,280
  • Sound Salmon Solutions: $2,120

The nonprofits were selected because of their work protecting local ecosystems, increasing access to the outdoors, restoring waterways and salmon habitat, supporting sustainable farming and helping people connect more deeply with the natural world.

For Experience Momentum, a locally owned health and fitness company with locations in Lynnwood, Fremont and Mill Creek, the event is part of a much larger mission. The company is a Certified B Corporation and a long-standing member of 1% for the Planet, meaning it donates a portion of its revenue to environmental causes.

“At Experience Momentum, we help people take care of their bodies through physical therapy, fitness, nutrition, massage and integrative wellness,” Tysland said. “But we also recognize that our health doesn’t exist in isolation. Clean air, clean water, access to green spaces, healthy food systems, and thriving ecosystems all play a role in human health. Sweat for the Environment is one way we bring that belief to life.”

Experience Momentum plans to continue Sweat for the Environment as an annual event and hopes to keep growing participation and impact in the years ahead.
