Yes, I want to support My MLTnews! What the Sidelines Have Taught Me
This past weekend was a blur of cleats, sunscreen, and soccer. My youngest son, Phoenix, played multiple games in a local tournament. And right now, as I write this, the World Cup final is playing in the background while he and my husband eat popcorn and talk sports. It’s a welcome distraction, though it does mean I’m writing this column a little more slowly.
I still get confused about how offsides works, and I have never been a huge sports buff, but I love rooting for people and the things they are passionate about. My favorite parts of these events aren’t the scores, but the moments when teammates help each other up, take a knee when someone is hurt, or refuse to give up. Those are the moments when I feel a sense of community. We build it whenever we show up for one another and care about the same thing, even if it’s only for a little while.
If you want to build a little of that sense of community into your own week, so many of our local events make it easy. Come back every Monday for more outing ideas and explore the community resources at the bottom of this column if you’re looking for ways to give back or if you need support. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram for fresh posts and weekend reminders.
