After a 7-0 shellacking at the hands of the Shorewood Stormrays on March 17, Coach Jason Hanson and his Edmonds-Woodway Warriors were determined to not let that type of drubbing happen to them again.

On Tuesday, the Warriors had their chance at redemption against the Stormrays, one of the top 3A teams in the state. And although Shorewood again came out on the winning end, Hanson and his Warriors still walked away with their heads held high.

The Stormrays picked up the 4-0 Wesco League victory over the much-improved Edmonds-Woodway on a rainy and blustery night at Edmonds-Stadium.

Hanson had nothing but good things to say about his team’s performance after the loss to Shorewood.

“I thought we executed a gameplan really, really well the first 15, 20 minutes — and then throughout the game,” Hanson said. “We were more balanced and competitive. I thought our spirits were high. It was a positive night, regardless of the outcome of the game.”

That mid-March 7-0 loss to Shorewood was so impactful for Hanson and his coaching staff, they started looking ahead to Tuesday’s rematch even before they had left Shoreline Stadium on March 17.

“We were already talking as we were walking off the field at Shoreline how we were going to approach them differently,” Hanson said.

Then, in the buildup to Tuesday’s match, a new game plan was prepared and rehearsed. “We spent a lot of time the last couple of practices with some formation changes and some philosophical ways that we play — get the ball off our feet quicker.”

“We’re a different team than we were four weeks ago,” Hanson concluded.

Edmonds-Woodway did look like a different team against Shorewood than they were the first time the two squads met. In the March 17 matchup, the Stormrays scored twice in the first six minutes; on Tuesday, the first Shorewood goal didn’t come until the 18th minute when Stormrays’ senior Nikola Genadiev slotted a penalty kick into the lower right hand corner of the goal.

Genadiev’s PK was a result of a foul committed against teammate Tallyn Lord by E-W’s Campbell Turcott in the 18-yard box.

“Unfortunate PK,” said Hanson. “We were playing so well. It was unfortunate to have that happen.”

A second Shorewood goal came six minutes later when senior Kaito Ayers slid a low shot under the diving E-W goalkeeper Daniel Abraham. Ayers scored again in the 33rd minute when he gathered the rebound of an Abraham save and kicked the ball into an open net, giving the Stormrays a 3-0 halftime advantage.

Shorewood’s final score came 10 minutes into the second half when junior Noah Mekonnen headed in a shot from 12 yards out off a Genadiev corner kick.

The four goals scored by Shorewood is the second-highest yielded in a game this season by the Warriors — the most given up by E-W was the seven goals to the Stormrays in their first meeting.

“The challenge is they’re still really good,’ Hanson said of Shorewood.

Abraham made four saves in Tuesday’s loss, his best being in the 59th minute when he turned away a blast by Ayers on a breakaway, denying the Stormray senior a hat trick.

The Warriors had a pair of prime opportunities to score against Shorewood, both on second-half corner kicks. In the 49th minute, a shot by senior Neaphtila Daniel grazed the left goal post while, in the 69th minute, a redirect by sophomore Tega Okoloko bounced just wide of the same post.

With the win, Shorewood kept their perfect 2A/3A Wesco League South Conference record intact at 7-0-0, and remained unbeaten overall at 9-0-1. Edmonds-Woodway’s Wesco League South Conference mark dropped to 4-3-0, 6-4-0 overall, ahead of key contests against Mountlake Terrace and Lynnwood over the next seven days.

With their scheduled contests against powerhouse Shorewood now behind them, Hanson and the Warriors enter the final stretch of their 2026 regular season on an uptick. “We feel good,” Hanson said. “We’re ready to get going and get to our next game on Friday.”
