South County Fire is inviting community members to provide feedback on proposed commissioner election district boundaries following the City of Edmonds’ annexation into the regional fire authority in June 2025.
Residents can learn more and share input during a free open house from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, at the Edmonds Downtown Fire Station, 275 6th Ave. N.
Redistricting would allow Edmonds residents to run for commissioner positions within districts that include the city, according to South County Fire. All voters in the regional fire authority can vote for commissioner candidates in general elections, regardless of district boundaries. Since the annexation, Edmonds has been represented on the board by a nonvoting liaison.
The Regional Fire Authority is governed by a seven-member Board of Fire Commissioners, including five commissioners elected from geographic districts and two elected at large. State law requires commissioner districts to have roughly equal populations.
An independent consultant developed four redistricting proposals to rebalance district populations and provide Edmonds residents with the opportunity for direct representation on the board.
Community members can review the proposed maps and learn more at southsnofire.org/redistricting.
Questions and comments may also be submitted by email to [email protected] or by voicemail at 425-551-1251.
South County Fire officials said a future public hearing will be held before the board adopts a final redistricting plan.
Commissioner districts are used for election purposes only and will not affect 911 response times or the delivery of fire and emergency services.
