A first for the Puget Sound Senior Baseball League: All-woman crew officiates game at MTHS

The Puget Sound Senior Baseball League and the Northwest Baseball Umpires Association celebrated a memorable event during a July 19 game at Mountlake Terrace High School: The first time an all-female crew officiated a baseball game in the history of both the two organizations.

The contest pitted two teams from the Age 45 & over Teton Division, the RiverCats and Knights. Umpire Stephanie Capelli handled home plate duties, and Regina Boyd took on the field umpire assignment, the league said in a news release.

Boyd, a U.S. Armed Forces veteran, has umpired for many years in the region. Capelli is recent graduate of the prestigious Harry Wendelstedt Umpire School in Florida. Despite a ninth-inning rally by the Knights, the RiverCats prevailed 8-6.

The Puget Sound Senior Baseball League (PSSBL) is the largest adult baseball league in the U.S. Now in its 37th season, the nonprofit PSSBL has 1,200 players competing on 78 teams in 10 different divisions. The divisions are divided by age and skill level with the youngest players joining at age 18 and the oldest players still playing hardball in their 80s. The nonprofit Northwest Baseball Umpires Association (NBUA), founded in 1969, is the largest umpire group in Washington state.

Besides games as Mountlake Terrace High School, the 2026 PSSBL schedule also includes contests at Edmonds-Woodway High School and Lynnwood High School. Some games are played at Meadowdale Athletic Complex (Meadowdale Playfields). In recent years, the league has scheduled games at Meadowdale High School, which is undergoing renovation. The PSSBL plans to return to the home of the Mavericks in 2027.
