A free paint recycling collection event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at McCollum Park. Participants are required to register in advance through the event registration page, which also includes details about accepted and prohibited materials.

The event is part of the nationwide PaintCare paint recycling program and will be hosted by GreenSheen, which will collect and recycle the materials.

“People are always looking for these events that take hard-to-recycle items,” Kellee Byard, sustainable communities program coordinator for Snohomish County WSU Extension. “The event is part of a nationwide paint recycling program called PaintCare, and a company called GreenSheen actually hosts the event and collects everything. My program is helping promote it as much as possible.”

Byard said the event will accept architectural paint and related products in original containers that are five gallons or smaller. Event staff will unload materials for participants, who are asked to remain in their vehicles during the drop-off process.

What are accepted:

  • Interior and exterior house paint, including latex, oil-based and enamel paints
  • Deck stains, floor paints and slip-resistant coatings
  • Primers, sealers and undercoaters
  • Single-part stains, varnishes, shellacs and lacquers
  • Clear waterproofing sealers for wood, concrete or masonry
  • Rust-preventative paints and metal coatings
  • Paint used for grass, lawns or sports fields

What are not accepted:

  • Stucco, grout, plaster, joint compound and cement-based products
  • Aerosol spray cans
  • Paint thinners, mineral spirits, solvents and deck cleaners
  • Glues, caulking, epoxies and two-part resins
  • Automotive and marine paint
