Jazz bands from Bothell High School, Shorewood High School and Mountlake Terrace High School will host a benefit screening from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at Trinity Lutheran Church to support their upcoming trip to New York City.

The three bands have been selected to compete in the 31st annual Essentially Ellington Jazz Competition, hosted by Jazz at Lincoln Center. Since 1999, Washington state schools have been invited to participate in the prestigious national event.

The benefit will feature a screening of the documentary Wheedle’s Groove, directed by Jennifer Maas. The film chronicles Seattle’s 1960s and 1970s soul and funk scene, following a local DJ’s discovery of a rare 45 record and exploring the rich musical history of the Central District. It includes appearances by artists such as Quincy Jones, Sir Mix-A-Lot, Kenny G and Ben Gibbard.

All ticket sales and additional donations will be split evenly among the three programs.

Tickets are available online.
