The Rotary Club of Lynnwood is hosting its 10th annual Challenge Series Derby Car Race from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, June 20, at Lynnwood Elementary School, 18614 44th Ave. W., Lynnwood. The race is for students with developmental disabilities, but is inclusive of all students.
According to a news release from sponsors, the race pairs children 5 years and older who have developmental disabilities with older children trained as racers to guide the cars and apply the brakes along the course. The event is co-sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lynnwood, the City of Lynnwood, the Edmonds School District and Life Enrichment Options (LEO). LEO is a nonprofit that advocates for, and works to support, individuals with developmental disabilities through supportive housing, recreation, employment opportunities and community education
The two-person derby cars featured at the Challenge Series Race were designed by Leo Finnegan, who also co-hosts the event. He said he was inspired by his own son, who is developmentally delayed and enjoyed racing.
This is a free family event, and families are able to register their child for the race. The day includes face painting, a bouncy house, Kool Kids ice cream truck, mascots Webbly and Driip, T-shirts, balloon twisting, a Chick Fil-A lunch, plus a fire truck, a new Community Transit electric bus and a tow truck to explore.
“When I was able to come out here last year and meet a lot of great people and see the smiles on your faces as you were racing, that’s what I live and breathe for,” said one volunteer. After the race last year, a mother said: “This was such a fun event for my child because he actually got to participate in the race and not as a spectator, thank you, we will be back next year.”
Sponsors include ChildStrive, Mountain Pacific Bk, Lynnwood Event Center, AK Roadside LLC, Chick Fil A, Services Monroe & Associates, South Snoh Firefighters Foundation, Lynnwood Police Guild, Anna’s Home Furnishing, Community Transit, Mr Kleen Car Wash and Carter Acura, along with partners the City of Lynnwood, Edmonds School District and Life Enrichment Options.
