Going into Thursday game against Glacier Peak, Mountlake Terrace needed two wins to slip into the District 1 3A Girls Softball Tournament; now the team needs just one.
The Hawks took care of business with a 5-2 victory over the Grizzlies in a playoff game for fourth place in the Wesco 3A South Conference. With the victory, Mountlake Terrace will now play the fourth place team from the Wesco 3A North, Stanwood, for the final berth in the district tourney.
The Mountlake Terrace—Stanwood matchup will take place Friday, May 15, at Stanwood High School; first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. The winner of the game becomes the No. 8 seed and will face No. 1 seed Everett in the first round of the district tournament on Tuesday, May 19.
Mountlake Terrace’s win over GP was fueled by the bats of sophomores Gabby Calhoun and Kira Doan, who picked up six of the eight Hawks hits in the game. Calhoun and Doan each went 3-for-4 at the plate, with Doan’s hits all doubles. Calhoun also pitched a complete game, giving up just three hits to the Spartans.
In other action, the doubles’ team of Nicki Bouche and Tina Liu will be playing for the Wesco 3A South doubles’ title on Friday, May 15, after easy wins in their first two rounds of the tournament. Bouche and Liu, who have already punched their ticket for the district tourney next week, will face the Edmonds-Woodway team of Myint-Zu Kyan and Hanna Rehnfeldt.
Hawk Allison Lorraine had been expected to be a contender in singles’ competition at the Wesco 3A South tourney, but had to withdrawal after suffering injury playing select soccer over Mothers’ Day weekend.
