A busy day turned into a very productive day for local athletes competing at the WIAA 2A/3A/4A State Track & Field Championships in Tacoma on Friday, as two Royals, two Hawks and a Warrior all earned medals with top-five podium finishes.
Lynnwood’s Ena Dodik captured the runner-up spot in the 3A girls discus throw with a toss of 134-10. The second-place medal capped off a four-year run in the discus event at the state championships for the senior after finishing fifth as a sophomore, 17th as a freshman and 21st last year as a junior.
Joining Dodik on the 3A girls discus throw podium was Edmonds-Woodway senior Kaydence Hansen, who placed fourth with a toss of 132-6.

After finishing second in the 3A girls long jump last year, Mountlake Terrace’s Allison Mervin duplicated the accomplishment this year with a leap of 18-9 1/2, a personal best for the senior. Mervin was bested for the second straight year by Mercer Island’s Aaliyah Khan, now a two-time champion in the event. Mervin took home a fifth-place medal in the event as a sophomore and finished 14th as a freshman.

Lynnwood’s Monet Winfield-Sullers also made it to the 3A girls long jump podium on Friday as the senior leaped 17-10 3/4 to earn the fifth-place medal in the event.
Mountlake Terrace senior Brynlee Dubiel placed third for the third straight year in the 3A girls 100-meter hurdles. It was the fourth year Dubiel had qualified for the event as she finished 17th in 2023 as a freshman.

Dubiel will run for another individual medal on Saturday in the 3A girls 300-meter hurdles final after posting the second-best time of 44.25 in the event’s preliminary races on Friday.
A total of 17 Edmonds School District student athletes saw action during Day 2 of the three-day state meet. Events on Saturday will close out the competition, which is being held at Mount Tahoma High School.
