Mel & Mia’s Dessert Cafe in Perrinville is closing Sunday, July 26. Owned by Bill and Rebecca Pennington and established in 2016, their café brought its decadent cakes and desserts as well as “high tea” to Edmonds.
After so many wonderful memories, Mel & Mia’s is moving to 320 S. First St. in Mount Vernon, Washington. They recently announced that they are expanding into a beautiful new space. Their next chapter means more seating, more menu offerings, more special events and more room.
“Thank you for supporting our dream and being part of our journey. We truly couldn’t have done it without you,” the Penningtons’ announcement said. “We can’t wait to welcome you to our new café and share everything we’ve been working on. Stay tuned for our grand opening date and celebration details.”

Raising Cane’s just opened its second location in Washington state on June 23. Located next door to Walmart on 164th Street Southwest in Lynnwood, this place has been so busy since opening day that it has two security guards to help with the lines and traffic.
I managed to visit during a slow Sunday when there was no line, but during peak times be prepared to wait. There are two lanes for drive-thru available, and you can order ahead online.

This fast-food chain was established in 1996 in Louisiana by a dog-loving entrepreneur who named the place after his Labrador retriever, Raising Cane. The menu is primarily breaded chicken fingers, crinkle-cut fries and Cane’s Sauce. Drinks include sodas as well as their signature lemonade and sweet tea. The menu includes several combos with drinks and special deals for larger groups.
Raising Cane’s locations are community-focused and they partner with many local organizations related to education, feeding the hungry, active lifestyles, pet welfare and entrepreneurship.
