The Sound FC girls 13U team will be playing in the U.S. National Soccer Championship finals at 8 a.m. Thursday, July 23 in Nashville, Tennessee.
According to parent Ciara Leckie, Sound FC is based in Woodinville and serves the North Sound region including Edmonds, Bothell and Kenmore. The team punched their ticket to Nationals after winning the State Cup in May.
Despite extreme weather conditions in Nashville that included rain, thunder, lightning and humidity in the mid-90s, “the girls have battled and gone the distance,” Leckie said. After going 2-1 in pool play versus Kentucky, South Carolina and Mississippi, the Sound team advanced as the No. 1 wild card. They then beat Cook Inlet from Alaska (2-0) in the quarterfinals and Braddock Road from Virginia in the semifinals, winning in PKs (4-2).
In the championship, Sound FC will face Desoto from Mississippi — the team’s only loss during original pool play, Leckie sad.
“This Sound team is all about teamwork. The eight (regulation) goals were scored by four different players with four assists. The defense has only given up two scores with the goal keeper preventing two goals during the semifinal PK shoot-out,” Leckie said.
“I am super proud and delighted on the attitude, application and togetherness of the team,” said Sound FC coach Paul Bayly. “They are playing fantastic and representing the Sound FC club and state of Washington with pride.”
Said Sound FC Director Brandon Mitalas: “The legacy these young women are building is paving the way for the future of girls’ soccer in our community, and the impact of their success will be forever woven into the fabric of Sound FC.
“Hopefully, by the end of tomorrow, we’ll be celebrating the addition of a star above our club crest to commemorate a National Championship,” Mitalas continued. “But regardless of the final result, the pride we feel in what this team has accomplished will never fade. They have already made history, and they will always be champions in the eyes of the Sound FC family.”
