Yes, I want to support My MLTnews!First Friends, Lifelong Stories
My brother Tyler has been sleeping on my couch this week.
He normally works remotely from his house in Spokane, but his job is based out of Seattle. He passes through regularly, takes over the living room couch, and fills my fridge with beer and new snacks when he’s here. His visits are always a treat, featuring board games, conversation and lots of laughter.
Somewhere in adulthood, and especially after we lost our dad a few years back, something shifted. The person who knew me before I became anyone in particular started to feel less like a given and more like a gift. Siblings know a version of you that no one else does. My brother was my first friend and remains my longest and closest friendship.
I’ve been watching that same alchemy happen with my own kids this spring break, and it’s been one of the best parts of the past week. My sons went to see Project Hail Mary together — their idea, no parental orchestration required. My daughter and my youngest son have made late-night Dick’s Drive-In runs for french fries and shakes a regular thing. And as I’ve wandered the house, working through my very glamorous list of chores, I’ve been entertained by their laughter as they share their stories and opinions with each other. There’s still the occasional argument, but they work through it.
I used to think it was my job to engineer their closeness. Turns out, the best thing I can do is get out of the way.
If you’re looking for ways to get your own crew together this week, here’s a roundup of family friendly events and activities. Come back every Monday for more ideas, and explore the community resources at the bottom of this column if you’re looking for ways to give back or need support. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram for fresh posts and weekend reminders.
