Yes, I want to support My MLTnews! When the house gets quiet
Two nights in a row this week, all three of my teenagers were out with friends, and my husband and I were left at home as we researched whether a massage gun, weighted vests, or both might help our creaky, achy, suddenly very middle-aged bodies.
Our quiet house made me wistful for when my kids were younger. Back then, I was operating on broken sleep and Goldfish crackers, and a quiet, kid-free night was a rare treat. I’d daydream about a future where the kids could entertain themselves, the house stayed clean for more than five minutes, and I could sleep past 6 a.m. Now that I’m actually here, I feel a pull towards the noise I used to wish away.
There’s a saying in the philosophy of mindfulness: “Be where your feet are.” Easier said than done when you’re mentally toggling between sentimental memories of toddlers and always-present back pain. Maybe the real work is simply learning to live in the moment. And the best way I know to do that? Make time to enjoy life and the people I love as they are now.
There are plenty of opportunities to make the most of the day in our community. Here’s a roundup of family-friendly events and activities. Some are free, some cheap and some splurges. Come back every Monday for more ideas and explore the community resources at the bottom of this column if you’re looking for ways to give back or need support.
