WA Cares Fund long-term care applications available July 1

Washington residents who have contributed to the WA Cares Fund can now begin applying for long-term care benefits ahead of the program’s July 1 launch date.

State officials said applying now will allow eligible residents to complete the approval process and begin receiving services as soon as benefits become available.

“We’re excited that this important program will help support Washingtonians who need long-term care,” Angela Ramirez, secretary of the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, said. “The flexible benefit means you can choose the services that meet your needs, whether it’s installing a wheelchair ramp for your home, paying a family member to be a caregiver, or getting transportation to a doctor’s appointment.”

Most Washington workers have contributed to the program through automatic payroll deductions since July 2023. To qualify for benefits, applicants must meet both a contribution requirement and a care needs requirement.

Applicants can create an online benefits account and complete a short application. Loved ones or representatives may also be authorized to help manage an applicant’s account. Residents may also apply by phone by calling 844-CARE4WA or seek in-person support through their local Area Agency on Aging.

After verifying contribution eligibility, WA Cares staff will assess an applicant’s care needs, including assistance with activities such as bathing, eating, medication management and mobility. Approved applicants will then be notified of their available benefit amount.

Beginning July 1, beneficiaries can use WA Cares benefits for services and supports including in-home care, home modifications, adaptive equipment, home-delivered meals, transportation assistance and residential care. Benefits may also be used to pay a family member, including a spouse, to provide care.

Applicants approved before July 1 can begin searching for registered providers through the WA Cares online directory.
