The Kiwanis Club of Edmonds recently completed their latest effort to present dictionaries to third graders across the Edmonds School District. According to a Kiwanis announcement, this campaign has continued to be highly popular with students (and teachers) across the district for the last couple of decades. “All this even in the face of increased lobbying for digitization of materials and distribution of tablets/Chromebooks to kids at earlier and earlier ages,” the announcement said.
This year, the Kiwanis were asked by teachers to distribute more than 500 dictionaries to their classrooms. During these presentations, club members demonstrated how to use a dictionary and have the kids look up words to help make the use more concrete. One of the third graders commented that these dictionaries are like “Google in a book,” which brought smiles to the Kiwanis team.
