The Edmonds-Woodway High School Jazz Combo was selected as the high school outstanding performers in the small jazz combo division in the Student Downbeat Awards.

The awardees are: Oren Kaushansky (piano), Jonathan Badier (bass), Max Fenwick (drums), Logan Ignatenko (tenor sax) and Gavin Bunbury (trumpet).

Bunbury received special distinction as an outstanding soloist in the group. Students were selected based on an audio recording that was submitted in December 2025.

E-W Band Director Jake Bergevin said he is proud of these hardworking and dedicated players whose names all appear in May’s DownBeat magazine. This is E-W’s first Downbeat Award for instrumentalists.

DownBeat was established in 1934, and the contest for high school students began in 1976. The students were lauded at the May 14 concert and presented with plaques celebrating their accomplishment.

These students can be heard on Wednesday, May 27 at Jazz Alley and on Saturday, May 30 at the 5th annual Edmonds Jazz Walk.

Shunpike Storefronts & Artist Residencies featured artist

Storefront studio and exhibition space: 1401 4th Ave., Seattle

Residency: Through end of July

Mountlake Terrace-based artist Ai-Chun Huang, who was previously featured for an Edmonds public art project two years ago, is participating in the Shunpike Storefronts & Artist Residencies program in downtown Seattle.

During the residency, Huang is exhibiting and creating multimedia works including paintings, animation and installation pieces that reflect themes of migration, identity, motherhood, urban life and personal journeys. The work often combines hand drawing, digital media and storytelling inspired by both her Taiwanese background and experiences living in the Pacific Northwest.

The Shunpike program transforms vacant storefronts into artist studios and public exhibition spaces, bringing creativity and community engagement into downtown neighborhoods. For more than 15 years, Shunpike has helped revitalize urban spaces by supporting local artists and activating empty commercial spaces through art.

Lampstand Theatre presents ‘This is NOT Comedy of Errors’

Saturday through Sunday, June 6-7

Edmonds Historical Museum, 118 5th Ave. N.

Tickets

What do you do when someone accuses you of stealing money and you know you are innocent? How do you react when a stranger somehow knows your name?

This Is NOT Comedy of Errors, written by Anna Doepp, Breanne Pancarik and William Shakespeare, proves Shakespeare still has surprises in store.

The production follows strangers meeting and friends becoming estranged as confusion, mistaken identities and shifting loyalties turn lives upside down. By flipping the script on Shakespearean expectations, the play explores how quickly relationships – and reality itself – can change.
