The Foundation for Edmonds School District on Wednesday announced a record year of food distribution through its Nourishing Network programs, providing nearly 362,000 food items to local children and families facing food insecurity across the Edmonds School District community.
According to a Foundation news release, its Nourishing Network addresses student hunger through coordinated food support programs. These include weekend meals, summer meals, holiday meals and pop-up pantries, working together to ensure students and families have access to nutritious food.
As food costs continue to place pressure on household budgets across South Snohomish County, the Foundation said its programs ensured consistent access to nutrition for students and families during weekends, school breaks and other times when school meals are not available.
Through weekend meal kits and pop-up pantries alone this year, the Foundation distributed:
- 361,902 food items
- 28,111 food kits through eeekend meals and pop-up pantry programs combined
- 24,637 students served through weekend meal kits annually
- 13,926 household members reached through monthly pop-up pantries annually
“This record year reflects what is possible when a community comes together to support its students,” said Foundation Executive Director Deborah Brandi. “Every food drive, every meal delivered and every donation directly translate into children having access to food when they need it most. These numbers represent real support for real families across our district and we are incredibly thankful.”
The Foundation’s weekend meal kit program helps ensure students have access to nutritious food over the weekend, while pop-up pantries provide monthly grocery-style support for families facing food insecurity. Both are sustained entirely through community donations, volunteer support and grant funding.
The Foundation thanked the Verdant Health Commission, Puyallup Tribe of Indians, Hazel Miller Foundation, Liberty Mutual Foundation and the thousands of community members whose generosity made this work possible.
