Buying an engagement ring can feel intimidating, even when you know exactly what you’re looking for. After all, it’s one of the most meaningful purchases you will ever make. It’s also a big financial investment. And yet, few of us get the chance to learn about engagement rings before we start shopping.
“Learning about engagement rings can feel like learning a new language, and not everyone has time for that. Life is just too busy,” says Andy Cline, manager of Edmonds’ own Cline Jewelers.
So if you’re on the verge of proposing – but you’ve never considered the ins and outs of the engagement ring shopping – you aren’t alone. But you don’t have to go in blind. “When you shop for an engagement ring, you should feel educated and empowered to make the best decision for yourself,” Cline says. “But at the same time, we don’t want our clients to feel like they need to do all the research on their own. That’s where the engagement ring consultation comes in.”
The engagement ring consultation is a crucial first step in the ring buying process, but it’s a step that many people overlook. We asked Andy Cline to explain a little more about how a consultation works, how it benefits engagement ring buyers, and what you can expect from a ring consultation with Cline Jewelers.

How Engagement Ring Consultations Work
An engagement ring consultation is your chance to speak one-on-one with a jeweler about what you are looking for in an engagement ring, and to ask any questions you may have. Whether you have no idea what you’re doing or you know exactly what you want, an engagement ring consultation is the best place to start your shopping journey. At an engagement ring consultation, you will cover:
- Ring styles – whether you know what you want or you need inspiration
- Stone types and options (natural diamonds, lab diamonds or gemstones)
- Ring details (band types, band metals, ring details, and more)
- Ring sizing
- Budgeting
- Your timeline
- Custom, semi-custom and ready-to-wear options
- If applicable, any customizations you would like
“Some people come in with nothing more than a rough estimate of what they want to spend. Other people come in with pictures of rings they like, an exact budget and directions for a custom engraving. No matter what, by the end of the consultation, everyone leaves feeling more confident,” Cline tells us.
What to Expect From an Engagement Ring Consultation
At a consultation, you’ll speak to a jeweler one-on-one. It typically takes about 45 minutes. You and your jeweler can walk around the store and look through the cases at ready-to-wear options, look through examples of custom-made rings, or both! You will be encouraged to ask questions, share your ideas and direct the conversation where you want it to go.
“I love when clients take the lead in an engagement ring consultation,” says Cline. “That’s actually exactly what we want: to answer your specific questions.” No two engagement ring shoppers are alike. The consultation is where you and your jeweler get to figure out your particular wants and needs. Your jeweler will also share some knowledge with you. What you discuss will depend on what sort of ring you are looking for.
For instance, if you’re on the hunt for a traditional diamond ring, then your jeweler will give you the scoop on the “4 Cs,” which are the metrics used for judging diamond quality: color, cut, clarity and carat size. “It’s all about sharing knowledge that empowers our clients to make an educated choice,” Cline says. “When you know what jewelry experts look for in a quality diamond, then you know when you’re looking at a quality diamond.

Of course, there are some points you will need to discuss no matter what. You can expect to talk a bit about engagement ring styles–what do you want your ring to look like? Are you looking for custom-made, semi-custom, or ready-to-wear rings? You’ll also get a chance to talk about your budget requirements. On that topic, Cline has some advice: “We recommend coming in with at least some idea of what you want to spend on your ring, even if it’s just a general range.” But of course, no one will pressure you to change your budget – or anything else, for that matter.
“If you choose to have your consultation with us, you can expect a no-pressure space. We want this to feel like a safe place for each client – to talk through your ideas, offer our advice and expertise, and come up with a plan tailored to you as an individual,” Cline says. He adds that creating a positive atmosphere is important not just for the jeweler-client relationship, but because this should be a time to celebrate: “An engagement ring consultation should be a happy experience. You’re preparing for one of the most exciting moments of your life! Every decision here is yours and yours alone – no one will push you one way or the other.”
