Pilchuck Audubon Society will host a public presentation titled “Seabirds as Sentinels: Auklets, Puffins, and the View from Destruction Island” at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 9, at the Adopt A Stream Foundation’s Chinook Room, 600 128th St. SE.
The event will feature author and seabird biologist Eric Wagner who will discuss how seabirds, such as rhinoceros auklets, serve as indicators of ocean and ecosystem health. Drawing from his book Seabirds as Sentinels, Wagner will explore connections between seabird populations, climate change, fisheries and environmental history.
Each spring, thousands of rhinoceros auklets return to Destruction Island off Washington’s outer coast, where they nest and raise their young. Wagner’s research highlights how these birds provide insight into broader changes affecting the Pacific Ocean.
Wagner holds a doctorate in biology from the University of Washington and has studied seabirds across the globe. His writing has appeared in publications including The Atlantic, Orion and High Country News.
Attendees will have an opportunity to purchase books on-site from Edmonds Bookshop. The event will also include Pilchuck Audubon’s annual officer elections.
The presentation is free and open to the public. Bird enthusiasts, conservation supporters and community members are encouraged to attend.
